About Our Chickens
We raise a number of pure breed and cross breed dual purpose chickens.
It’s just about Spring and the girls are laying up a storm. The incubators are humming away and the weekend sees a fresh clutch of chirpy balls of fluff. So many people are catching on to the joy of keeping your own chooks ( you can’t beat that fresh egg for breakfast can you) and we’ve had lots of enquiries. Plymouth Rocks (Barred)
The Plymouth Rock is a dual-purpose, cold-hardy bird and therefore makes a great breed for the small farm or backyard flock owner.
Plymouth Rocks lay a large egg that varies in color from light to medium brown with the average hen laying approx 200 eggs per year.
Although large in size they are docile and easily managed either in pens or free range. They are very pretty and are a popular choice as backyard pets.
Barnevelder (Double Laced)
The Barnevelder is a medium heavy breed of chicken named after the Dutch town of Barneveld.
Today, Barnevelders are bred both as a utility breed and a show breed. They are medium heavy dual-purpose chickens laying a good number of dark brown eggs but also yielding a reasonable carcass.
They are hardy birds and good foragers.
They are good winter layers and have a quiet disposition.
Light Sussex
Another very pretty chicken, smaller than the Plymouths but better egg layers. Still classed as a dual purpose breed the Sussex will produce a reasonable bird for the table.
Rhode Island Red
Rhode Island Reds are tough birds, resistant to illness, good at foraging and free ranging, and typically docile, quiet, and friendly.
Rhode Island Reds are excellent egg layers. Although they can sometimes be stubborn, they can end up producing up to 250 to 300 large, light to dark brown eggs per year.
